Earlier this week, when we reported on how Anna Cardwell's daughters are coping with her death, we mentioned reports of a custody dispute.
Good is true.
Initially, Mama June Shannon took custody of Kaitlyn while Kylee went to live with her biological father.
Now, Kylee's father is also suing for custody of Kaitlyn. He cites her close bond and June's numerous failures as a mother and grandmother.
On Monday, The US Sun reported that Anna Cardwell's ex, Michael Cardwell, is suing June Shannon for custody of 11-year-old Kaitlyn.
He filed this lawsuit just over a week after Anna died from her terminal adrenal carcinoma.
Their daughters are Kaitlyn Clark, 11, and Kylee Cardwell, 8. Kylee is Michael's daughter and he immediately took custody of her.
In particular, Michael has been an active part of Kylee's life. And although Kaitlyn's biological father hasn't done the same for her, she has spent a lot of time with Michael.
Michael's court argument is that June had previously been “inconsistent” in Kaitlyn's life.
While part of this was due to events in June's life (her downward spiral a few years ago almost claimed her life), another factor was the rifts between June and Anna. And not the mean ones either.
Although Michael and Anna split in 2017, more than half of Kaitlyn's life ago, they didn't lose touch.
Michael would reportedly continue to take both girls during their custody visits.
He writes that he has “fully and completely assumed a permanent, unequivocal, committed and responsible fatherly role” for Kaitlyn.
Michael's court record also notes that he “devoted himself to the constant care of the child and established a bonding and dependency relationship with the child.”
“Both (Michael and Anna) understood, recognized, accepted and behaved as if (Michael) were the father of the child and accepted full and permanent responsibilities as the father of the child,” the document reports.
Michael's lawsuit adds that this was “without expectation of financial compensation.” Simply put, he was a father to her since he was a baby.
And he may have proof that he's not the only one who says that.
In 2015, when Kaitlyn was just a preschooler, Anna vlogged about their bond.
“Kaitlyn's father is Michael, and that's where she'll be, and that's where she'll stay,” the girl's late mother said at the time.
At the time, Anna and Michael were married. But still, those were her words on the matter.
Michael also weighed in on June's suitability (or lack thereof) to be Kaitlyn's caregiver.
Several years ago, June lost custody of Alana. And Anna spent about half of her childhood in the care of her maternal grandmother, not June.
Just a reminder: almost a decade ago, June became the center of a scandal that ruined Here comes baby boo boo. TLC, a network that has aired many monsters over the years, parted ways with it and canceled the series even though many episodes were in the can.
Mark McDaniel sexually abused Anna when she was a child. After being released from prison, June reconnected with him. The two were in bed together.
Obviously, this led to Anna being estranged from her mother for many years. They only reconciled earlier this year, after Anna's diagnosis.
As such, Michael does not believe that June is a suitable caregiver. He suggests yes, however.
On the one hand, we all hate thinking about Anna's daughters living in separate homes after losing their mother.
At the same time…we, the audience, have no idea which home is best for Kaitlyn. Apparently, the family court will have to decide.
