Moviegoers have debated for years whether or not 'Die Hard' is a Christmas movie, but now, a guy who's very familiar with the art is settling that once and for all…and he's saying, yes.
cnn Jake Tapper noted film historian and author jeremy arnold on his show the other day, and they were there to talk about their new book, 'Christmas in the Movies,' and finally JT got to the age-old question… is 'DH' actually a Christmas classic?
According to Arnold, it absolutely is… but he also explains that the reason some feel it isn't has to do with how they define Christmas movies, traditionally speaking.
Despite that, Arnold maintains that 'Die Hard' has all the makings of a Christmas movie from the start, starting with the fact that Bruce Willis'John McClain is trying to reconcile with his ex-wife… that ends up being the backdrop for everything that follows.
Tapper agrees, pointing out more evidence that 'DH' undoubtedly sounds like Christmas throughout, even though it's obviously an action movie. In fact, he points to the climax to make his point. Spoiler alert… use gifts to kill the bad terrorist, Hans.
All this is to say… 'Die Hard' has all the trappings of Christmas, albeit embedded with plenty of violence and great lines delivered via walkie-talkie. Of course, some still feel otherwise.
As BW himself said, I have a machine gun now… ho ho ho!
