Retirement tracking at home

Dozens of members of Congress have announced plans to leave their seats in the House of Representatives, setting a rapid pace for congressional departures, and more are expected as the 2024 elections approach. Given Republicans' slim majority in House of Representatives, the wave of departures has the potential to lead to a significant shakeup next year.

Rate of retirement announcements compared to previous cycles

Through December 14, 2023

Includes those who have announced they will retire and will not run for re-election in November 2024. Seats expected to be filled before November 2024 are not counted. Retirements from previous years are those that resulted in an open seat in the general election.

Some lawmakers leave after serving in Congress for decades, while others have arrived more recently. Many in both categories have cited frustration, saying rancor and dysfunction have taken over the institution in recent years.

Few of the departures that have been announced so far are expected to upset the balance of power in the closely divided House of Representatives, where a large majority of seats are gerrymandered to make them safe for one of the two political parties. But unseating an incumbent is much more challenging than winning an open seat, giving Republicans and Democrats some opportunities to gain seats.

The seat previously held by former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., who was ousted in November, is Democrats' best chance to flip a district in their bid to regain control of the House. Court-ordered redistricting may give Democrats an even greater advantage in winning the swing district seat in November. Republicans see the departure of Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., leaving her seat to run for the Senate, as one of her best chances of reclaiming a Democratic seat and increasing her chances of keeping the majority. her in November.

This table shows the boundaries of districts that will be used in 2024. Because the lines have been redrawn since the 2020 election, the vote margins shown here may be different than the margins for that district in 2020.
