Broadway lovers were heartbroken to learn of Chita Rivera's passing on Tuesday, January 30.

A beloved star of stage and screen, Chita was one of the most famous Latina entertainers of her generation.

Her death has brought “immense” to those who knew her best.

The cause of Chita Rivera's death: a 'brief illness'

When her daughter Lisa Mordente first announced her mother's passing, she understandably didn't give many details.

In his brief statement, he simply noted that Chita had died after a “brief illness.”

Of course, this could mean a number of things and we'll update you as soon as we know more.

The news was particularly heartbreaking for those who knew her best.

“It is with immense personal pain that I announce the death of beloved Broadway icon Chita Rivera. “My dear friend of over 40 years was 91 years old,” her representative Merle Frimark said in a statement to People on Tuesday.

In her statement, Chita's daughter also mentioned all the loved ones she left behind.

“She is also survived by her brothers Julio, Armando and Lola del Rivero (her older sister Carmen predeceased her), along with her many nieces, nephews and friends. Her funeral will be private. A memorial service will be announced in due course for her,” her statement reads, while requesting that any donations in her memory be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Chita was best known for her show-stealing roles in West Side History, Chicago, and The kiss of spider women.

She originated the role of Anita in West Side Storywhich was immortalized on screen by Oscar winners Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose.

Of Puerto Rican descent, Chita was nominated ten times for the Tony Award. She won Tony Awards for The Rink in 1984 and The kiss of spider women in 1993.

He also received a special Tony for lifetime achievement in 2018.

His musical work transferred to both the small and big screens. She was in movies like Sergeant. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and television shows like Will and Grace.

Memorably, Nickie had a cameo in the film adaptation of chicagoand most recently lent his talents to the film adaptation of tick, tick… BOOM! starring alongside other Broadway legends in Sunday's performance.
